Interventions for improving self-regulated learning in school: Findings and tasks for future research.

This symposium is composed of four papers, all of them related to classroom interventions for the improvement of autonomy at different educational stages. Firstly, professors from the Universities of León and Nottingham Trent University (Germany) bring us data on the "componential analysis of the effectiveness of strategic and self-regulated writing instruction: what and how to instruct, in primary school students". Secondly, professors from the Universities of Oviedo and Minho (Portugal) will talk about the "short and medium term effects of improving knowledge and skills in self-regulated learning and text comprehension strategies on academic performance in Primary School students (3rd and 4th grades)". Thirdly, professors from the University of Oviedo will talk about the paradox of how having resources for quality learning is not a sufficient condition for better performance. This intervention is entitled "The two faces of Janus. We know how to improve students' SRL competences, but, paradoxically, this is not always accompanied by improvements in performance". Fourthly, professors from the Universities of Navarra, Almeria and Granada will present the rationale and results of a study entitled "Effects of Internal vs. External Regulation Factors during Learning in Self-Regulated Study".
José Carlos Núñez is Professor and Dean of Educational Psychology at the University of Oviedo, Spain. He teaches in the Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and in the Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education Research. In terms of research, his two main areas of interest are: (i) the study of cognitive, motivational and emotional variables in students with and without learning difficulties; (ii) analysis of self-regulation strategies for learning (both from a theoretical and intervention perspective). She has been a member of the Committee of Experts of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCyT) for the Selection of Research Projects; member of the Committee of Experts of the Social and Legal Sciences Area of the National Agency for the Quality of the Spanish University System (ANECA); and member of the National Commission for the Evaluation of Research Activity (CNEAI). He has been responsible, as PI, for the development of several research projects funded by the National Research Plan and member of the research team of European and Latin American research projects. Her research has been published in prestigious journals (eg., Aggression and Violent Behavior, British Journal of Educational Psychology, Computer and Education, Computers in Human Behavior, Comunicar, Contemporary Educational Psychology, Current Psychology, International Journal of Educational Research, Journal of Experimental Education, Learning and Individual Differences, Learning Disabilities Quarterly, Metacognition and Learning, Personality and Individual Differences, Psicothema, Psychology in the Schools, Reading and Writing, Revista de Psicodidáctica, Sacandinavian Journal of Psychology.
